Designing for Sustainability, Can Be Like Raising a Child

Writer: Ric FramptonRic Frampton

Developing a product for sustainability often feels like being a parent. You nurture it, prepare it for life, and set it up for success—but at some point, you have to let go.

👶 Raising a Product

Love and patience = Design with care

Teach it right from wrong = Ethical sourcing, sustainable materials

Arm it with the skills to succeed = Durability, repairability, recyclability

🚀 Time to Let Go

It enters the world = The market, supply chains, users)

Hope it meets the right people = responsible consumers, circular economy partners

Be there when needed = Warranty, service parts, reuse strategies

Accept that control is limited = Its journey continues beyond you

♻️ A Products Journey in the Circular Economy

Like a child entering adulthood, a sustainable product must be designed for the world it will navigate. We can prepare it for longevity, but it also depends on how it's used, repaired, and eventually recycled.

The key? Design with the future in mind. 🌍
